Bacon Flavored Dog Treats – Homemade & Cheap!

During summer, I have to kind of penny pinch for a few weeks, and one of the first things that I have to skimp on is buying expensive dog treats. I had some leftover bacon fat one morning, and decided to try making some homemade dog treats for the very first time.

Homemade Dog Treats

My dogs are going crazy over these simple biscuits that were so EASY! Buddy usually doesn’t even like crunchy treats but he loves these. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients for Dog Treats

2.5 cups flour (I used stone ground rice flour)

1 egg

1 Cup Milk

1/2 Cup Beef Stock (or you can use water)

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup bacon grease (you can use more or less)

greased cookie sheet

How to Make Homemade Dog Biscuits

1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

2)  Beat egg in  bowl

3) stir in milk, beef stock/water, salt, and bacon grease

4) mix in flour slowly, until the a dough that can be molded with your fingers is created

5) you can roll out the dough with a rolling pin and then cut into shapes with a cookie cutter, or roll it into small balls (that’s what i did, since it was faster).

6) bake 35 minutes in oven

7) Make sure to wait to give them to your dog until they are fully cooled down! You can even try one, they kind of taste like croutons!

Store in a covered container, or in your fridge.

The recipe is cleald “Granny Boyd’s Biscuits”… it’s from Nigella Lawson’s book “how to be a domestic goddess” but I guess you may be able to find it online somewhere? They’re a great “emergency” biscuit recipe as you just need store cupboard things + butter. I overcooked them a bit as I’ve not baked in this oven before but they were still very tasty 🙂

Actually, no these are NOT Granny Boyd’s Biscuits. This is a recipe for dog treats, not for cookies with chocolate in them! Chocolate is poison for dogs!

The ratio of dry to liquid ingredients is a bit off and makes something more like a batter. I rescued it by doubling the flour, bacon drippings and egg to dilute the milk and water. I have a happy dog though, so it’s all good.

I am starting to think maybe the type of flour matters – I used rice flour, which is a different consistency than normal flour. I’ll have to try it out with normal flour and modify this recipe 🙂

According to the recipe, it says 1.2 tsp of salt. I am assuming that should be 1/2 tsp of salt.?

Haha! Good catch. Yes. It should be 1/2 tsp. I will fix that 🙂

I followed the recipe as posted and also ended up with a battery mess! I wonder if the 1C of milk should read 1/2 C?
I added quite a lot of additional flour (didn’t measure, just put in spoonfuls until I got a better consistency). In the end, they were still too soft to cut into squares, so I rolled them into balls and pressed them flat after placing them on the parchment-lined cookie sheet. Worked out okay, but be warned that recipe is off.

Worked fine for me! Did you perhaps use a different type of flour? The rice flour I used is a slightly different consistency than regular flour.
